FIFA president Gianni Infantino has announced a major initiative to rebuild every football facility in Gaza that was destroyed during Israelโs years-long offensive. The pledge came during his speech at the International Summit for Gaza Peace held in Egypt following the recent ceasefire.
The summit, co-chaired by United States President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, focused on maintaining peace and supporting Gazaโs reconstruction after a two-year-long conflict. Global leaders from Pakistan, the Arab world, Europe, and the United Nations, including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also attended the event.
The appearance of the FIFA president at such a high-level political summit was a rare and notable moment. Infantino emphasized the unifying power of football and its role in restoring hope among Gazaโs youth.
โFootballโs role is to support, unite, and give hope in the region,โ Infantino said. โIn Gaza, in Palestine, we will help rebuild all the football facilities and bring the sport back to life with the Palestinian Football Association.โ
He further revealed that FIFA will launch a special fund to reconstruct football infrastructure in Palestine. The organization will also provide footballs, pitches, instructors, and assistance in organizing local competitions.
The FIFA president highlighted that the organization had already contributed through initiatives like mini-pitches and the FIFA Arena program, stressing the importance of giving children hope through sports.
Infantino also praised the โcritical leadershipโ of President Trump in supporting peace efforts.
Meanwhile, FIFA continues to face growing pressure to address the Gaza conflict, with Palestinian authorities and human rights groups like Amnesty International urging the suspension of Israel from international football. Infantino said that any such decision would require careful coordination with continental football confederations.
