After Hours of Slow Internet, PTCL Drops a Major Update

KARACHI – The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced the successful completion of repair work on a submarine cable repeater, restoring most of the internet connectivity across Pakistan.

Earlier this week, PTCL warned users about possible slow internet speeds and temporary disruptions for up to 18 hours due to essential maintenance on the country’s undersea communication network. The telecom giant confirmed that operations on the affected segment of the submarine cable have now been fully restored.

According to PTCL officials, internet speed and overall connectivity have returned to normal in most parts of the country following the maintenance work. However, users in Karachi continue to experience slower browsing and difficulties uploading and downloading content on social media platforms. Technical teams are working to identify and resolve any remaining issues affecting local performance.

The maintenance operation was part of PTCL’s ongoing efforts to ensure network reliability and improve the quality of internet services nationwide. Submarine cables play a crucial role in keeping Pakistan connected to the global digital network, and even minor faults can significantly impact internet speeds and communication quality.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a new initiative to issue licenses for Fixed Satellite Services (FSS), a move aimed at expanding broadband access to remote and underserved regions. The policy is designed to attract international companies such as Starlink and Shanghai SpaceCom to invest in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.

Under the PTA plan, licensed operators will be permitted to establish gateway stations and Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs). Each license will be valid for 15 years, with a fee of USD 500,000, and service rollout must begin within 18 months of approval.
