Punjab’s New Biker Law Mask Before You Ride

The Punjab government has introduced strict new measures to fight worsening air pollution, making it mandatory for motorcyclists to wear masks across the province.

Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced that the step aims to protect citizens from rising smog levels and improve overall air quality. She explained that polluted air from Delhi, Chandigarh, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, and Patiala is drifting into Lahore, worsening conditions. Other southern cities such as Multan, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar are also being affected by cross-border smog.

The minister said that construction sites must now cover building materials to prevent dust pollution, while goods transporters are required to keep their loads properly covered. β€œWearing masks while riding motorcycles is now compulsory,” she emphasized, urging citizens to close car windows and keep home doors and windows shut to limit exposure.

According to Aurangzeb, a slight improvement in air quality is expected during the afternoon hours between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., although mild haze may continue. The government has also begun using anti-smog guns and water sprinkling operations in major cities like Lahore to reduce airborne dust and pollutants.

Officials believe that public cooperation will be key in combating smog and ensuring cleaner air for everyone. The Punjab government continues to monitor pollution levels and has warned that additional restrictions could be imposed if the situation worsens.

The new policy is part of Punjab’s broader environmental strategy to curb emissions, regulate construction dust, and control vehicle pollution. The government hopes these measures, including the mask mandate for motorcyclists, will help protect public health and reduce the harmful impact of smog.
