The Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the restoration of the national identity card of Arshad Khan, famously known as Arshad Chaiwala. The decision came after his CNIC was blocked by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) without prior notice.
Following the LHC directive, NADRA reinstated Arshad Khan’s identity card. The authority’s Verification Board later confirmed that Arshad Khan and his family are verified Pakistani citizens.
During the hearing, Arshad Khan’s lawyer, Omar Ijaz Gilani, informed the court that all issues regarding his client’s documents had been resolved. Based on this assurance, the court formally disposed of the petition.
Earlier, the tea seller from Islamabad had approached the LHC after both his passport and CNIC were blocked. The court noted that such administrative actions without due process violate a citizen’s constitutional rights. The bench emphasized that no individual can be denied their legal identity without a proper investigation or formal notice.
With the restoration of his national identity card, Arshad Khan’s legal status as a Pakistani citizen has been reaffirmed. The LHC’s ruling highlights the importance of transparency and procedural fairness in actions taken by public institutions like NADRA.
