Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has sparked outrage on social media after making a controversial post comparing Israel’s bombing of Gaza to Diwali celebrations in India. The director, known for his bold and often provocative remarks, faced severe criticism for what many called an “insensitive and dehumanizing” statement.
Varma, who has directed several acclaimed Hindi and Telugu films, posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “In INDIA, only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA, every day is DIWALI,” followed by fire emojis. The post immediately drew widespread condemnation, with users accusing the filmmaker of mocking the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza.
Social media users were quick to call out Varma for his lack of empathy and poor judgment. Many described the remark as deeply offensive, especially at a time when thousands of people in Gaza continue to face displacement, destruction, and loss of life.
Rakhi Tripathi, daughter of Professor VK Tripathi — known for highlighting the plight of Gazans — was among those who condemned Varma’s post. She emphasized that Diwali, the festival of light, symbolizes peace, hope, and the triumph of good over evil — values completely opposed to the devastation in Gaza.
Several users noted that Varma’s comment reflects a larger problem in society — where insensitivity toward human suffering is often normalized online. Despite the backlash, the post received thousands of likes, sparking further concern about growing intolerance and the trivialization of global tragedies on social media.
Critics argued that using a sacred festival like Diwali to justify or make light of violence is morally wrong and socially irresponsible. They called on public figures to exercise caution and compassion when commenting on humanitarian crises.
While Ram Gopal Varma has yet to issue an apology, the incident has reignited debate about the ethics of online expression and the responsibilities of influential personalities in shaping public discourse.
