US President Donald Trump celebrated what he called a “historic victory for peace” after Thailand and Cambodia signed an expanded ceasefire agreement on Saturday. The deal, which officially ends years of border tension between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, was announced during Trump’s five-day visit to Asia.
The signing ceremony brought together Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Both leaders described the accord as a major step toward lasting stability. The agreement includes terms for disarmament, prisoner releases, and renewed border cooperation — a move widely seen as restoring trust between the two countries.
President Trump praised the peace accord as evidence that the United States is demonstrating leadership again in global diplomacy. “We stopped the war between Thailand and Cambodia,” he said, adding that 18 Cambodian prisoners of war would be freed as part of the peace process.
The Thai Prime Minister confirmed that his government would begin removing weapons and releasing prisoners in accordance with the new terms. He also highlighted a joint statement on reciprocal trade, aiming to finalize a framework for economic cooperation by the end of the year.
“This is not just a peace deal; it’s the beginning of shared prosperity,” Anutin said.
Trump described the accord as “a milestone that will save millions of lives” and reaffirmed Washington’s role in promoting regional stability. He said the agreement shows America’s ability to lead and build peace through trade and diplomacy — proof, he claimed, that the US is showing leadership again after years of global uncertainty.
During the event, Trump also cited progress in other regions, including the resolution of the Pakistan–Afghanistan conflict and peace efforts involving Saudi Arabia. He praised regional leaders for their roles in advancing dialogue and cooperation.
The Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire marks a highlight of Trump’s first Asia tour since taking office. The White House said the trip demonstrates the administration’s “renewed commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
As Trump concluded, he emphasized that America’s influence abroad has been restored. “Today, the world sees the United States providing leadership again — not through war, but through peace.”
