Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the reopening of gas connections for domestic consumers across Pakistan, marking a major move to address the country’s long-standing energy supply issues.
Speaking at a ceremony on Sunday, PM Shehbaz said that the government has started issuing new connections of high-quality RLNG (Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas) to the public. He noted that this step would help ease the pressure on households struggling with limited gas supply during recent years.
The Prime Minister recalled that during the PDM government in 2022, Pakistan faced severe gas shortages, which caused difficulties for both domestic and industrial consumers. However, he said the current administration has worked hard to stabilize the situation and ensure consistent gas availability.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the efforts of his government in improving energy infrastructure and ensuring sustainable delivery to all provinces. He congratulated coalition partners for their cooperation in achieving what he called “a milestone toward national energy self-sufficiency.”
Officials confirmed that the decision to restore gas connections follows months of planning and policy revisions to make distribution more efficient. The government aims to prioritize residential users before expanding supply to commercial and industrial sectors.
Earlier, the Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced a new discovery of oil and gas reserves in Sindh’s Khairpur district. The company reported that the exploratory well Faakir-1 had yielded promising gas and condensate results. OGDCL holds a 95% working interest in the project, while Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) holds the remaining 5%.
Industry experts believe that these developments, combined with the reopening of gas connections, will improve energy access for millions of households and help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuels.
