In a rare legal decision, a man in Turkey has been ordered to pay “cat alimony” to his ex-wife for the care of their two pet cats. The unusual settlement highlights a growing trend of pet-related legal cases in the country.
According to Turkish media reports, a man identified as Buğra B. and his ex-wife, Ezgi B., finalized their divorce in Istanbul with a unique agreement regarding their pets. Under the court-approved settlement, Buğra will transfer full custody of the couple’s two cats to Ezgi.
As part of the arrangement, Buğra must pay 10,000 Turkish liras (around Rs. 67,000) every three months for the next ten years to support the cats’ care. The payments will be adjusted annually to match inflation. Without inflation, the total amount over ten years will be nearly Rs. 2.7 million.
Court documents state, “As long as the cats stay with Ezgi B., and for no longer than ten years, Buğra B. will pay 10,000 liras quarterly for their upkeep.” This “cat support” deal is one of only two financial agreements between the former couple. In addition, Buğra will pay 550,000 liras (Rs. 3.6 million) in material compensation to his ex-wife.
The couple reportedly divorced over “severe incompatibility” but resolved the pet custody matter peacefully.
Legal experts in Turkey say this case reflects a wider recognition of animal welfare in family and civil law. While animals are still classified as “movable property” under the Turkish Civil Code, the Animal Protection Law of 2004 ensures pets have the right to a comfortable life and protection from cruelty.
The “cat alimony” ruling is seen as a milestone, showing how Turkish courts are increasingly acknowledging the emotional and financial responsibilities tied to pet ownership after divorce.
