Football icon Ronaldo has hinted that his long and illustrious career may soon come to an end. In a heartfelt interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the 40-year-old Al Nassr star said that retirement is approaching “soon,” calling it a decision he has been preparing for since his mid-20s.
“Soon,” Ronaldo replied when asked about his retirement plans. “It will be very, very difficult, but I’ve been preparing my future since I was 25. Nothing compares to scoring goals, but everything has a beginning and an end.”
The Portuguese legend added that stepping away from the game will allow him to spend more time with his family. “I’m going to have more time for myself, for my family, to raise my kids,” he said.
Still connected to Manchester United
The former Manchester United forward said he continues to follow the club’s progress closely despite his departure under tense circumstances three years ago.
“I’m sad because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and one I still hold close to my heart,” Ronaldo shared. “They don’t have the right structure right now, but I hope that changes because their potential is amazing.”
Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League last season — their lowest position since 1973–74.

Ronaldo admitted his last match will likely be emotional. “I will probably cry,” he told Piers Morgan. “I’ve been preparing for this moment since I was 25.”
The Portuguese captain said he no longer seeks validation from fame or money. “Being the first football billionaire is great, but now I just want to enjoy training and competing.”

Cristiano Ronaldo began his professional career with Sporting CP in 2002 before joining Manchester United in 2003. He later achieved legendary status at Real Madrid, scoring 450 goals in 438 matches. After a successful stint with Juventus, he joined Saudi club Al Nassr, continuing to make history.
Internationally, Ronaldo is football’s all-time top scorer with 143 goals for Portugal and has led his nation to victories in the UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
