WhatsApp has officially announced that it will soon be available as a dedicated app for the Apple Watch, marking a major expansion for the popular messaging platform. This new update will allow users to receive call notifications, read full messages, and even record and send voice notes directly from their Apple Watch.
In a statement on Tuesday, WhatsApp said the new companion app will help users stay connected without having to reach for their iPhone. “For the first time, WhatsApp on Apple Watch will support many of the most requested features,” the company stated in its blog post.
Among the new features are message reactions, improved on-screen chat history, and enhanced visuals for images and stickers. The Meta-owned messaging service assured users that all messages and calls on the app will remain end-to-end encrypted, maintaining the same privacy standards as its mobile and desktop versions.
The new app requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, running watchOS 10 or above. This integration comes after weeks of speculation, as the app was spotted in testing last week. The move highlights WhatsApp’s growing focus on expanding accessibility across different devices.
WhatsApp also confirmed that additional features will be introduced for Apple Watch users in future updates. The goal, according to the company, is to provide a seamless experience across devices, whether on phones, tablets, or wearables.
This update follows WhatsApp’s recent rollout of its iPad app in May, which added support for video and audio calls, screen sharing, and simultaneous camera use.
Interestingly, the announcement comes just months after Snapchat launched its own version for Apple Watch. However, unlike WhatsApp, Snapchat’s app only allows users to reply to messages, without viewing images or videos.
