Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has left for a two-day official visit to Azerbaijan to attend events marking the fifth anniversary of the countryβs Victory Day. The visit reflects Pakistanβs commitment to strengthening ties with Azerbaijan across multiple sectors.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar is accompanying the prime minister on the trip. Shehbaz Sharif will attend the Victory Day celebrations in Baku at the invitation of President Ilham Aliyev.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During the visit, the prime minister is expected to hold a meeting with President Aliyev to discuss the full range of bilateral relations. The talks will focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, defence, education, and regional connectivity.
Pakistan and Azerbaijan share deep-rooted ties based on faith, history, culture, and mutual respect. Both countries also maintain close collaboration in regional and international forums, including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the United Nations (UN).
According to officials, the visit will reaffirm Pakistanβs strong support for Azerbaijanβs sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will also help deepen the strategic partnership between the two brotherly nations.
Growing Regional Trade
Recent data highlights growing trade between Pakistan and Central Asian states, including Azerbaijan. Pakistanβs total trade with the region, along with Afghanistan, reached $2.41 billion in FY25, up from $1.92 billion in the previous fiscal year.
Exports climbed to $1.77 billion, while imports stood at $641 million, showing clear progress compared to FY24. Afghanistan remains Pakistanβs top trading partner, followed by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, which continues to emerge as an important market for Pakistani goods.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifβs visit to Azerbaijan is expected to further boost economic and diplomatic relations, paving the way for stronger regional cooperation and connectivity.
