Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to deepen their defense cooperation and expand collaboration in trade, energy, and regional connectivity. The agreement was reached during a meeting in Baku on Friday between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended Azerbaijanβs Victory Day celebrations at the invitation of President Aliyev, marking the countryβs military success in the 44-day Karabakh conflict. Shehbaz congratulated Azerbaijan, calling its victory βa beacon of hopeβ for people seeking self-determination, including those in Kashmir and Palestine.
During their talks, the leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations. They agreed to enhance multi-dimensional cooperation, with a particular focus on defense and military collaboration. They also discussed trade and investment opportunities, energy supply and joint ventures, and regional transport and connectivity projects.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally invited President Aliyev to visit Pakistan, an invitation the Azerbaijani leader accepted. The two leaders expressed their commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.
Shehbaz praised President Aliyevβs leadership, especially regarding the peace agreement signed with Armenia earlier this year. He described it as a key step toward stability in the South Caucasus region. In response, President Aliyev thanked Pakistan for its consistent support during Azerbaijanβs efforts to regain the Karabakh region. He also acknowledged Islamabadβs constructive role in promoting peace in South Asia.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening strategic relations, highlighting the mutual benefits of cooperation in defense, energy, trade, and regional connectivity. The meeting reinforced the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Azerbaijan and set the stage for closer collaboration in the coming years.
