PM Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday called on Afghanistan to take decisive action against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups operating from its territory. He stressed that regional peace and prosperity depend on Afghanistanโs commitment to eliminating these threats.
Addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference (ISC) in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan has always promoted peace through dialogue and diplomacy since gaining independence in 1947. He added that despite challenges and conflicts, the country has remained firm in its pursuit of stability.
The prime minister recalled the recent aggression from Pakistanโs eastern border in May, praising the armed forces for their strong and timely response. โHaving won the war, we now need to win peace through sincere and honest efforts,โ he said.
Highlighting Afghanistanโs importance to regional stability, PM Shehbaz noted that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is crucial for connectivity, trade, and long-term development. However, he expressed regret that peace in the region continues to face disruption due to militant groups.
โIt is deeply concerning that terrorists continue to threaten peace within Afghanistan and beyond,โ he said. Referring to recent cross-border attacks, he stated that Pakistanโs response was โfirm and decisive,โ ensuring that such aggression would not be tolerated.
PM Shehbaz also appreciated the role of friendly nations, especially Turkey and Qatar, in facilitating peace talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban government. He reiterated that Afghanistan must understand the need to rein in the TTP and other terrorist networks to ensure sustainable peace.
Earlier, Pakistanโs Foreign Office said that while some elements within the Afghan Taliban favor peaceful relations with Pakistan, othersโallegedly backed by foreign actorsโare deliberately creating tensions between the two countries.
