Truck Crashes Into Market in South Korea, Injuring 20 People

A light truck crashed into a market in South Korea on Thursday, injuring 20 people, emergency officials confirmed. Two of the injured were unconscious after suffering cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred at a market in Bucheon, approximately 20 km west of Seoul, the capital. A fire official said the truck reversed for 28 metres before speeding 150 metres into the outdoor market.

Authorities said the driver blamed the crash on a sudden surge of acceleration. Police confirmed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The vehicle has been handed over to investigators to determine the exact cause of the crash. Officials are reviewing the truckโ€™s condition and available surveillance footage to understand how the incident occurred.

Local residents and market visitors were evacuated immediately following the crash. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of the injured pending family notifications.

Incidents like this are rare in South Korea, but authorities emphasized the importance of strict vehicle safety checks and careful driving in crowded market areas.

Police urged witnesses and anyone with additional footage to come forward to assist in the investigation. They are also reviewing traffic and safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This crash in Bucheon highlights the risks of high-traffic areas and crowded public spaces in South Korea, prompting local officials to increase monitoring and improve emergency response procedures.
