The UAE is preparing to celebrate UAE National Day 2025, the country’s final public holiday of the year. This year, Eid Al Etihad, also known as UAE National Day, falls at the start of December, offering residents a chance for a long weekend.
According to the official Cabinet calendar, December 2 (Tuesday) and December 3 (Wednesday) are designated as public holidays for UAE National Day 2025 under Cabinet Resolution No. (27) of 2024 Concerning Public Holidays. However, the government may adjust the holiday schedule to extend the break for residents.
Authorities could declare Monday, December 1, as an additional holiday or shift the December 3 holiday to Monday. If this happens, citizens and residents could enjoy a four- or five-day break, including the weekend. Most experts predict a four-day holiday from Saturday through Tuesday.
Last year, the UAE celebrated National Day on December 2 and 3, with the weekend included, resulting in a four-day holiday. Officials are expected to announce the final schedule for 2025 closer to the date.
The UAE Cabinet has the authority to adjust public holidays to optimise the workweek, but Eid-related holidays cannot be moved, as they depend on moon sightings. Local authorities may also announce additional holidays for specific departments or entities if needed.
Public holidays in the UAE follow three main systems. Gregorian calendar holidays include events such as New Year’s Day and National Day. Islamic (Hijri) holidays, like Eid, follow lunar calendar moon sightings. Cabinet-adjusted holidays allow non-Eid dates to be moved to create extended weekends for the public.
