At least nine people were killed and more than 27 others were injured after a stockpile of confiscated explosives suddenly detonated inside a police station in Srinagar, Indian illegally occupied Kashmir (IIOJK). The incident took place late Friday night at the Nowgam police station, where a forensic team was examining the seized material.
According to officials, most of the victims were policemen and forensic experts who were inspecting the explosives at the time of the blast. Two members of the Srinagar administration were also among those who lost their lives. Authorities reported that at least five of the injured are in critical condition, and the death toll may rise as medical teams continue to treat the wounded.
NDTV senior executive editor Aditya Raj Kaul stated that the explosion was not a terror attack. He clarified that it was an accidental blast caused during the forensic inspection of the explosive substances stored inside the facility.
The blast in Srinagar occurred only days after a deadly car explosion in New Delhi. The earlier incident took place near the Red Fort on Monday and resulted in at least 12 deaths.
Indian authorities classified the New Delhi blast as a terrorist attack. Police had seized weapons and explosives from suspects just hours before the New Delhi explosion, raising concerns over a broader network coordinating such activities.
Investigators in Nowgam were already working on a case involving threatening posters issued by the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group. These posters warned of planned attacks on security forces and โoutsiders.โ
Officials said the investigation helped uncover what they described as a โwhite-collar terror ecosystem.โ This network allegedly involved radicalised students and professionals linked with foreign handlers operating from Pakistan and other countries.
During the investigation, police recovered almost 3,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate. The substance is widely known as a powerful explosive and suggested that the group was gathering materials for a large-scale attack in India.

Authorities are now conducting a detailed inquiry to determine how the accident occurred and whether proper safety measures were followed within the police station.
