Federal Minister for Railways, Hanif Abbassi, visited Karachi Cantt Railway Station on Sunday to inspect the upgraded facilities at the hub of Pakistan Railways. He emphasized that Karachi is not only the countryโs commercial hub but also a key center for rail transport.
During the visit, Hanif Abbassi said that modernizing Karachiโs railway station had been a long-standing demand. โWe have transformed the station, which is even larger than Lahore Railway Station,โ he stated. The upgrades include a CIP lounge, economy and family areas, and a world-class train, with free Wi-Fi for passengers.
The Minister highlighted ongoing work on railway tracks, undertaken in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He noted that track construction will take five to six years, but praised the Railways Ministry for completing significant work in just eight to nine months.
The visit coincides with the upcoming inauguration of the new Shalimar Train and other facilities at Karachi Cantt Railway Station by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by Hanif Abbassi. Pakistan Railways has installed automatic escalators, CIP lounges, and other modern amenities to enhance passenger experience.
The newly upgraded first-class lounge offers a modern, inviting ambiance with regional cultural touches. Beige sofas with wooden armrests are arranged for privacy and comfort. Traditional Sindhi Ajrakโpatterned tiles adorn the pillars, adding a cultural identity. Large arched windows allow natural light, while ceiling and pendant lights enhance the space. Green plants and framed artworks provide a serene atmosphere.
Officials said the lounge blends modern convenience with cultural aesthetics, providing passengers with a comfortable, airport-like experience. A television screen offers entertainment and passenger information, ensuring travelers enjoy both comfort and functionality.
Hanif Abbassi confirmed that these upgrades demonstrate Pakistan Railwaysโ commitment to modernization and improving services for all passengers. He urged citizens to experience the new facilities and highlighted the governmentโs efforts to elevate rail travel standards nationwide.
