China’s ‘Ice Boy’: Viral Image of Determined Student Sparks Nationwide Support

A young boy from rural Yunnan captured the hearts of millions in China after walking 5 kilometers in freezing –9°C temperatures just to sit for his final exam. By the time he arrived, his hair and eyebrows were frozen white, and his cheeks glowed red from the harsh cold. A teacher snapped a photo — unaware it would soon become a symbol of grit and hardship across the country.

The image of the “Ice Boy,” standing quietly despite the cold, quickly spread online. People were moved by his determination, and donations poured in — nearly 3 million yuan — allowing his school to install heating, provide warm clothing, and improve basic facilities.

Later, when the boy visited Beijing, he was stunned by the warmth inside buildings.
“In my home, we sleep wearing jackets,” he said. “Here, I can walk in just one shirt. Heating is a miracle.

More than a viral moment, the boy’s story sparked a national conversation about rural hardships, educational inequality, and the incredible strength of young students striving for a better future.
