The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported widespread destruction caused by calamitous rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) this year. The devastating rainfall and flooding have claimed 631 lives and injured 429 people up to September.
According to PDMA data, among the fatalities, 202 were men, 190 women, and 239 children. Meanwhile, 207 men, 86 women, and 145 children were injured in rain-related incidents across the province.
The calamitous rains also took a heavy toll on livestock, with 7,153 animals perishing during floods and heavy downpours. Homes were significantly affected, with 3,798 houses damaged across various districts. Of these, 1,089 homes were completely destroyed, while 2,709 suffered partial damage.
Educational institutions were not spared either. A total of 796 school buildings were damaged, including 166 fully wrecked and 593 partially affected structures. The PDMA highlighted that the monsoon season brought unprecedented cloudbursts and flash floods, leaving communities vulnerable and in urgent need of assistance.
Authorities noted that the calamitous rains disrupted daily life, washed away infrastructure, and posed significant challenges to relief operations. Rescue teams and local authorities have been working tirelessly to provide aid to affected families and restore damaged facilities.
The PDMA emphasized the importance of early warning systems and disaster preparedness to mitigate the effects of such natural calamities in the future. Officials also called for increased public awareness on flood safety measures.
The province continues to recover from this year’s heavy monsoon season, with rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts underway. The calamitous rains have highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure and better flood management strategies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
