PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Preparations For Next Monsoon Season

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to start preparations to prevent loss of life and property in the upcoming monsoon season.

The PM chaired a review meeting in Islamabad focused on climate change-induced damages and the mitigation plan for next yearโ€™s monsoon season.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif approved the short-term plan presented by the Ministry of Climate Change and instructed authorities to implement it immediately.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Planning, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) must work closely with provincial governments. Their goal is to develop a comprehensive strategy to address climate change impacts during the monsoon season.

The Prime Minister also directed preparations for convening a National Water Council meeting to formulate a national water management plan. He highlighted that better water management is crucial for mitigating risks posed by heavy rains and floods.

PM Shehbaz Sharif noted that Pakistan, as a developing country, spends a substantial portion of its GDP on mitigating climate change damages every few years. He stressed that these funds, instead of being used for development, are often diverted to counter the adverse effects of climate hazards.

โ€œPakistan has a negligible role in global climate change, yet it continues to suffer its severe consequences,โ€ he remarked.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Dr. Musadik Malik, Attaullah Tarar, and other relevant authorities. The PM underlined the importance of proactive measures to ensure that communities are better prepared for the monsoon season, minimizing the risk of casualties and property damage.

This directive comes amid increasing concerns over climate change impacts in Pakistan, particularly during heavy monsoon rains, which have historically caused significant damage in various provinces.
