Dr. Shamshad Akhtar officially became the interim Finance Minister of Pakistan after taking the oath at the Presidency. Upon her arrival at the Finance Ministry, she received a warm welcome from the Secretary Finance and senior officials. The Secretary and his team then provided a comprehensive briefing on the country’s economic situation and key financial indicators.

In her new role, Dr. Akhtar emphasized her commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline, encouraging investment, and addressing income inequality. Notably, she previously served as the Finance Minister in the interim government before the 2018 general election.

She also made history as the first woman to lead Pakistan’s central bank, serving as the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan from January 2, 2006, for a three-year term.
The upcoming interim Finance Minister is expected to confront significant challenges leading up to the possibly delayed elections.
