Katy Perry Testifies in Montecito Mansion Legal Battle

Katy Perry, the 38-year-old singer, is slated to appear in court as a witness in a non-jury trial related to a 1930s mansion in Montecito. Perry and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, purchased the property for $15 million in July 2020.

This legal dispute revolves around the eight-bedroom, 11-bath estate, previously owned by 84-year-old business entrepreneur Carl Westcott. Westcott, who is the father-in-law of former Real Housewives of Dallas reality star Kameron Westcott, was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease in 2015, a genetic brain disorder that led to his placement in a dementia care facility. He claims that he was not mentally fit to sign binding contracts and seeks to void the sale.

The attorney for Perry and Bloom’s business manager, Eric Rowan, argued that Westcott’s diagnosis did not impair his mental capacity. In contrast, Westcott’s attorney, Andrew Thomas, attributed his client’s alleged mental state to spinal surgery and painkillers.

During a recent court session, discussions revolved around Katy Perry’s testimony. Rowan proposed using her deposition as testimony due to her ongoing commitments in Alabama until October 19. However, the judge denied the request for a closed court and is inclined to have Perry testify remotely.

The judge emphasized, “I am inclined to have her do it remote, but I am not inclined to have a closed court. She is a person like anyone else. She is asking for a lot of money.” Perry is also seeking over $5 million in damages, which includes potential losses in rental income and property maintenance costs.

Throughout this legal battle, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have been managing their careers. Perry’s Las Vegas residency, her role as a returning judge on American Idol, and her recent involvement as the voice of a character in Peppa Pig’s 20th-anniversary special have kept her busy alongside the court proceedings.
