Aamir Khan Condemns Chauvinism in Bollywood Films

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan, promoting Laapataa Ladies for the Oscars, has spoken out against chauvinistic themes in Bollywood, calling them a setback for societal progress. In an interview with BBC Asia Network, Khan criticized the glorification of patriarchy in mainstream cinema, describing it as a trend that “pushes us back by a decade.”

Reflecting on his upbringing surrounded by strong women, Khan attributed his progressive views to his family environment. “I grew up with strong women—my mother, grandmother, aunt, sisters, and even my ex-wives,” he said with a smile. “Perhaps that’s why I see strength in women as a positive force, not a threat.”

Khan also emphasized his preference for socially relevant stories, though he clarified that entertainment remains his primary goal. “I naturally gravitate toward scripts that say something meaningful, but my first responsibility as a creative person is to entertain,” he explained.

At 59, Khan is embracing a purposeful phase in his career, with projects like Sitaare Zameen Par underway. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he spoke candidly about his finite active years, saying, “Life is unpredictable. I might have only 10 more productive years, and I want to make them count.”
