Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has once again spoken out against Bollywood’s creative shortcomings, particularly in comparison to South Indian cinema. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kashyap expressed his belief that Bollywood filmmakers lack the “brains” necessary to create a film like Pushpa: The Rise or its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule.
Kashyap pointed out that while the South Indian film industry is more empowered and supported through investment, Bollywood filmmakers seem to focus more on creating interconnected universes rather than prioritizing authentic filmmaking. He stated, “A film like Pushpa can only be made by Sukumar. They (Bollywood filmmakers) do not understand what filmmaking truly is.”

He went on to criticize Bollywood’s approach, saying, “When you create a universe, you start believing you are God.” Kashyap’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that Bollywood needs to shift its focus from replicating successful formulas to fostering original and meaningful storytelling.
Meanwhile, Pushpa 2, starring Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna, has become one of the highest-grossing films of 2024, gaining substantial domestic and international revenue.
