Murad Ali Shah Reinstated as Sindh Chief Minister for Third Term

PPP’s Syed Murad Ali Shah has been elected as the chief minister of Sindh on Monday, securing a significant lead against MQM-P’s Ali Khurshidi.

Murad, now serving as the province’s chief executive for the third term, garnered 112 votes, while Khurshidi managed to secure only 36 out of the total 148 votes cast during the polling.

It’s noteworthy that lawmakers from JI and PTI refrained from participating in the voting process, and PTI-aligned MPAs even protested against the election by chanting slogans.

The voting to elect the new chief minister commenced after the newly elected speaker, Syed Owais Qadir Shah, outlined the rules for the polling process.

On the preceding day, Owais Shah from the PPP was elected as the speaker of the Sindh Assembly, while Anthony Naveed secured the role of deputy speaker with a significant majority.

Shah garnered 111 votes, surpassing the 36 votes obtained by the MQM-P candidate Sofia Saeed, in the presence of 157 members of the provincial assembly.

Earlier, 147 newly elected members of the Sindh Assembly took their oaths of membership.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s results, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged as the leading party in the province, securing an impressive 84 seats, while the MQM-P trailed behind with 28 seats.

Independent candidates, including those affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), clinched 14 seats, while the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) secured two seats each.

As a result of the decision by parties, excluding PPP and MQM-P, to boycott the proceedings, elected members from GDA, JI, and PTI-backed independents did not attend the oath-taking session.
