LONDON – Barrister Shahzad Akbar, a vocal critic of Pakistan’s current regime, was brutally attacked near his home in Cambridge. The incident, described as a targeted assault, has raised serious concerns about the safety of political exiles.
According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the assailant wore a mask, gloves, and protective clothing, suggesting careful planning. Reports said Barrister Shahzad Akbar suffered a broken nose in two places and a hairline fracture to his jaw. He was left seriously injured and shaken by the attack.
This is not the first time Akbar has faced violence. He was previously targeted after leaving Pakistan due to threats to his life. The repeated assaults have sparked concerns over transnational repression and the security of dissidents living abroad.
PTI highlighted that the attack questions the safety of political exiles in the United Kingdom. The party stated that such violence undermines the UK’s role as a refuge for individuals persecuted for their political beliefs.
Barrister Shahzad Akbar remained in the UK following the ouster of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. During his tenure, Akbar served as Special Assistant and later Advisor to Prime Minister Khan on Interior and Accountability. He held federal minister status until 2022 and led key anti-corruption initiatives, including the Assets Recovery Unit, investigating major financial scandals.
Since leaving office, Akbar has faced National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigations over alleged unexplained assets and financial misconduct. He also survived an acid attack in 2023. Following that, he initiated legal proceedings against the Pakistani government.
In 2025, Pakistan formally requested his extradition amid ongoing investigations. Despite these pressures, Akbar continues to reside in Britain, where he remains an active critic of the Pakistani government.
The attack on Barrister Shahzad Akbar has prompted calls from PTI and human rights observers for stronger protection of political exiles. The incident highlights the risks faced by individuals who openly challenge powerful interests, even while living overseas.
