ISLAMABAD – Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar addressed strong criticism in the National Assembly over Shama Junejo’s inclusion in a recent United Nations delegation.
The issue surfaced when opposition members questioned Junejo’s participation, leading to heated debate. Dar responded first with a sarcastic remark, saying, “Even electric poles are installed, yet only the ‘Shama’ catches your attention.” His comment reflected frustration over what he described as unnecessary sensationalism.
After the tense moment, Dar offered a detailed clarification. He explained that official delegations to the United Nations are sent under the authority of the Foreign Minister. According to him, Shama Junejo was not part of the Foreign Ministry’s official list for that trip.
However, he confirmed that Junejo had joined the Prime Minister’s delegation, which is often larger and includes staff assisting with different tasks. “There is a specific delegation sent by the Prime Minister, which includes a range of officials and staff. Shama Junejo was a part of that group,” Dar stated.
He further highlighted the difference between the two delegations, stressing that her role in the Prime Minister’s team was legitimate and within established practice.
Dar also reminded the assembly that such political debates should not overshadow Pakistan’s diplomatic work on the global stage. He urged lawmakers to focus on constructive discussions instead of targeting individuals.
The clarification aimed to settle the controversy by outlining how delegations are structured and by emphasizing that Junejo’s inclusion was not irregular. The explanation also drew attention to the broader issue of how political narratives can sometimes distract from the country’s international responsibilities.
