Famous Mountaineer Murad Sadpara has Died Following his Ascent of Broad Peak

Renowned Pakistani mountaineer Murad Sadpara has died following his successful ascent of Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. Sadpara, who held multiple mountaineering records, was fatally injured by falling rocks during his descent. Local rescuers transported his body to the Japanese base camp.

The rescue operation, which included support from the Pakistan Army, involved six local climbers and rescue personnel—four from Sadpara’s village and two from the Shigar region. This morning, climbers Ashraf Sadpara and Zakir Sadpara were airlifted to Broad Peak to aid in the effort. Murad Sadpara’s body is expected to be returned to his village by evening.

Sadpara’s team had previously recovered the body of a porter from K2 who had died a year ago. Broad Peak, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, stands at 8,047 meters (26,555 feet) and is regarded as one of the “safer” eight-thousanders, though this accident highlights the dangers of high-altitude climbing.

Pakistan, which hosts five of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2 and Nanga Parbat, attracts climbers from around the globe.

In 2023, over 8,900 foreign climbers visited Gilgit-Baltistan during the summer climbing season from early June to late August.
