LAHORE – The Punjab Education Department has launched a formal inquiry after a translation error was found in a Punjab textbook for Grade 9. The computer mouse was incorrectly translated as “Chooha” (rat) in Urdu.
The mistake appeared in Chapter 11 of the Computer Science and Entrepreneurship section. Educators and parents expressed concern over the accuracy and quality of content provided to students.
The textbook, published under the supervision of the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB), is widely distributed across government schools in the province. Following the discovery, PCTB demanded a full explanation from the authors and publishers, requesting all relevant records for review.
The Director of Curriculum and Compliance has been instructed to submit a detailed report within 24 hours. The report must explain how the mistake occurred and outline corrective measures.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the quality control of educational material. Experts stress that errors in Punjab textbooks can confuse students and undermine learning, particularly in foundational subjects like computer science.
Parents and teachers have called for stricter review mechanisms to prevent such mistakes in future editions. They emphasized that students rely heavily on textbooks for accurate information, making precision essential.
The PCTB has confirmed that the Punjab textbook in question will be corrected promptly. Officials assured that updated versions will replace the faulty copies to maintain the standard of education.
As the inquiry continues, the department aims to reinforce quality control protocols to ensure similar errors do not occur in the future.
