Ex-Indian Army Chief Says “Immediate Firing Allowed” On Pakistan Border

Ex-Indian Army Chief Says “Immediate Firing Allowed” On Pakistan Border

Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has revealed key differences in military engagement rules along India’s borders with Pakistan and China. His remarks have sparked debate over operational policies and security strategy.

According to Naravane, commanders stationed on the Pakistan border operate under more flexible rules. He said that in certain situations, Firing allowed decisions can be taken immediately on the ground.

He explained that troops facing the Pakistan border have greater operational freedom. In contrast, the China border follows stricter engagement protocols and a different command structure.

Naravane noted that Firing allowed conditions may apply in urgent situations along the Pakistan frontier. However, such responses are not treated the same way on the China front.

He said the difference is based on the nature of threats perceived by the Indian military. According to him, Pakistan is linked to terrorism-related security concerns, which shape response strategies.

The former army chief emphasized that commanders are empowered to act within defined operational limits. Still, the level of autonomy varies depending on the border region.

Naravane’s comments have gained attention due to ongoing controversy around his upcoming memoir, Four Stars of Destiny. Portions of the book have already triggered political discussion in India.

Reports suggest that the manuscript is currently under review by the Ministry of Defence. Naravane declined to comment on some of the classified operational instructions mentioned in media reports.

Opposition leaders in India have raised questions about the handling of the 2020 Galwan Valley clash with China. The debate has intensified after excerpts from the memoir were published in the media.

Naravane defended the government’s position, stating that no territory was lost during the Galwan incident. He maintained that official statements on the matter remain accurate.

The 2020 Galwan clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and severely escalated tensions between India and China. It marked one of the most serious military confrontations in decades.

He also described China as a complex strategic challenge. According to him, understanding Beijing’s long-term intentions requires deeper analysis and study.

The remarks on Firing allowed protocols have added fresh attention to India’s border policies. Analysts say the statements highlight major differences in military posture across sensitive frontiers.
