The Institute of Space Technology (IST) inaugurated World Space Week (WSW) 2024, with a three-day celebration focusing on the global theme “Space and Climate Change.” This event highlights the critical role that space technology plays in understanding, monitoring, and addressing the impacts of climate change on Earth.
IST’s Vice Chancellor, Major General Rehan Abdul Baqi (R), praised the efforts of the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA) in organizing the event, emphasizing its role in promoting space science education in Pakistan. The event, which has been celebrated by IST for 19 consecutive years, brings together over 2,000 participants from more than 45 institutions across 10 cities in Pakistan.

The celebration includes various interactive activities such as competitions, workshops, and project displays aimed at inspiring students to explore how space technology can be used to address environmental challenges like deforestation, disaster prediction, and sustainable agriculture. The event also features support from over 45 space ambassadors and 50 adjudicators, with IST students actively managing and organizing the proceedings.
This year’s World Space Week is backed by the National Center of GIS and Space Applications, a project under the Ministry of Planning Development and Special Initiatives and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. The event underscores IST’s commitment to equipping the youth with the knowledge and skills needed to harness space-based technologies for a sustainable future.
