Karachi Court Sentences Man to 14 Years for Acid Attack on Sister

A Karachi court on Saturday sentenced Muhammad Ramzan to 14 years in prison for an acid attack on his sister in Manzoor Colony. The court also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on the accused.

The Gender-Based Violence Court announced the verdict in the 2022 case. Ramzan was found guilty of throwing acid on his sister and stabbing her two sons when they tried to protect her.

The judge also ordered Ramzan to pay Rs50,000 in compensation to his sister for the physical and emotional trauma caused by the acid attack. In addition, he received two separate four-year prison sentences for stabbing his nephews and was directed to pay Rs400,000 in compensation for their injuries.

Prosecutors said that Ramzan chased his sister outside her home before committing the acid attack. When her sons attempted to intervene, he stabbed both of them, leaving them injured.

This verdict is part of ongoing efforts in Pakistan to address gender-based violence and hold perpetrators accountable. Courts have increasingly taken stern action against individuals involved in acid attacks, which are considered one of the most heinous forms of domestic violence.

Legal experts praised the court’s decision, stating that strict punishment for acid attacks serves as a deterrent and sends a strong message against gender-based violence. They emphasized the importance of compensation to help victims recover physically and emotionally.

Authorities and human rights organizations continue to call for enhanced protection for women and stricter enforcement of laws against perpetrators of acid attacks.

The case has drawn widespread attention on social media, with citizens applauding the judiciary for delivering justice and urging the government to take further steps to prevent such violent acts.
