MULTAN β The M5 motorway has suffered further damage near Jalalpur Pirwala, as floodwaters have now collapsed the eastern track of the road. Rising water levels damaged the section after flooding impacted a nearby tunnel.
According to reports, the western track of the M5 motorway in the same area had already been washed away earlier due to heavy flooding. The collapse of the eastern side has now forced authorities to completely shut down the route.
Personnel from the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Motorway Police are present at the site with heavy machinery. Both sides of the motorway have been sealed off using large stones and barriers. The M5 motorway has now remained closed for the eighth consecutive day, causing major disruption in travel between Multan and Sukkur.
Meanwhile, flood conditions are worsening in Sindh due to rising flows in the Indus River. Authorities have confirmed high flood levels at Sukkur Barrage, while Kotri Barrage is currently facing low to moderate flooding.
Data from the National Emergencies Operation Center shows Sukkur Barrage is experiencing a high flood flow of 571,000 cusecs. Guddu Barrage has a medium-level flow of 500,000 cusecs, while Kotri Barrage is also recording medium levels that could worsen in the coming days.
Figures released by the Sindh Rain and Flood Emergency Monitoring Cell further highlight inflows and outflows across the barrages. At Guddu, inflow stands at 385,055 cusecs with outflow at 356,834 cusecs. Sukkur Barrage is seeing 499,850 cusecs inflow and 446,470 cusecs outflow, while Kotri Barrage records 326,942 cusecs inflow and 306,887 cusecs outflow.
Officials warn that continued rainfall in the northern regions may lead to further increases in river flows. Mountain streams and hill torrents are also likely to swell, raising fears of more flooding in the days ahead. The Sindh provincial government has stepped up monitoring efforts at all major barrages along the Indus River.
