Massive Forest Fire Rages in Diamer-Chilas, Threatening Wildlife and Ecosystem

A massive forest fire that erupted on June 15 continues to burn uncontrollably in the Hudur village and Thor Valley areas of Chilas, according to the Diamer Forest Department. The fire has engulfed large tracts of forestland, including Istari Nala, Sur Chap Nala, and Mo Nala, causing severe ecological damage.

Firefighting teams are working around the clock to contain the blaze, but the scale of the fire has overwhelmed efforts so far. Authorities have appealed for support from local volunteers, underscoring the urgent need for manpower and resources to combat the spreading flames.

The fire has devastated dense coniferous forests, which include deodar, pine, and fir trees, and has dealt a major blow to the region’s rich biodiversity. Wildlife habitats have been severely affected, with unknown damage to animal populations and plant species.

The forests of Diamer-Chilas, located in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, are ecologically significant and culturally vital to local communities. As the fire continues to threaten this fragile ecosystem, experts are calling for immediate, coordinated action to prevent further destruction and protect the area’s environmental heritage.
