ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is set to witness a major digital transformation as the government approved the country’s largest-ever spectrum auction, paving the way for nationwide 5G networks. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) cleared nearly 600 MHz across key bands, including 700, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600, and 3500 MHz, enabling high-speed connectivity across the country.
The introduction of 5G networks is expected within the next 4–6 months and could significantly boost productivity, fintech growth, exports, and foreign investment. Experts say the new high-speed mobile technology will modernize Pakistan’s digital landscape and create opportunities for innovation in multiple sectors.
IT Minister Shaza Fatima confirmed that preparations for the auction are underway. The Information Memorandum is expected to be released within 5–6 days after cabinet approval. She emphasized that at least 50 percent of the available 600 MHz spectrum is anticipated to be successfully acquired during the bidding process.
Previously, Pakistan offered only 100 MHz in spectrum auctions, of which 60 MHz was sold. Lessons from past auctions have shaped the planning for this unprecedented event to ensure transparency, fair pricing, and faster deployment of 5G networks.
The rollout of 5G had faced delays due to legal challenges, but all court cases have now been resolved through proactive government measures and support from the Attorney General. Additionally, the recent merger of Telenor and Ufone removed a major obstacle, further clearing the path for nationwide implementation.
The IT Minister expressed optimism that the auction could be conducted as early as February. While revenue projections are pending cabinet approval, industry analysts say the successful auction and subsequent launch of 5G networks could accelerate Pakistan’s position in the global digital economy.
