All 3 Million Gas Connection Requests Cancelled Under New Policy; Here's Why

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has announced a permanent ban on new residential gas connections based on domestic gas supplies. The decision comes amid growing energy shortages and aims to ensure more sustainable management of the country’s limited resources.

According to reports, the Petroleum Division issued a new framework approved by the federal cabinet. Both Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) have been directed to stop issuing residential connections from locally sourced gas.

As part of the policy, more than 3 million pending applications for new gas connections will now be canceled. This step marks a major shift in Pakistan’s energy distribution policy, moving from reliance on domestic gas to imported resources.

Under the revised rules, gas connections will still be available but only through imported gas. However, consumers choosing this option will face significantly higher costs. Imported gas will be about 70% more expensive than local gas, making household usage costlier for new applicants.

The framework also introduces nine new conditions for applicants. Gas companies will be allowed to provide connections to only 50% of applicants per year, based on priority. Those willing to pay urgent connection fees can expect installation within three months.

Additionally, households whose supply has been disconnected for over a year will only be eligible for reconnection through imported gas under the new guidelines.

Government officials said the new gas connection policy is designed to improve transparency and sustainability in energy distribution. It also highlights the growing challenges Pakistan faces in balancing domestic demand with shrinking natural gas reserves.

This policy marks a significant shift in the country’s energy strategy, signaling greater dependence on imported fuel to meet rising demand.
