Pakistani Climber Dies in Avalanche During K2 Expedition

A Pakistani climber tragically lost his life after being struck by an avalanche during a mountaineering expedition on K2, the world’s second-highest peak. The incident occurred while a group of four climbers were on their way up the challenging mountain.

The Deputy Commissioner of Shigar, Arif Hussain, confirmed that three foreign climbers were safely rescued with minor injuries. They have since been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Mohammad Iftikhar Hussain Sadpara, a Pakistani climber, did not survive the avalanche’s devastating impact.

Mohammad Iftikhar, a resident of Sadpara village in Gilgit-Baltistan, was an experienced mountaineer, and his death has shocked the local climbing community. His body is being transported to Skardu, where he will be laid to rest today in his home village of Sadpara, a region known for producing several famous Pakistani climbers.

K2, located in the Karakoram range, is notorious for its extreme weather conditions and treacherous terrain, making it one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. Despite these risks, it continues to attract mountaineers from all over the globe.

Earlier this month, another mountaineer, Klára Kolouchová from the Czech Republic, also lost her life on a separate expedition to Nanga Parbat, a mountain in Gilgit-Baltistan. Kolouchová fell between Camp 1 and Camp 2, leading to her tragic death.

The loss of both climbers has deeply impacted the mountaineering community. The Alpine Club of Pakistan, in expressing their condolences for Kolouchová, referred to her as an “inspiration to climbers worldwide.”

K2 and other peaks in the region continue to be significant challenges for climbers, who face both natural and physical obstacles in pursuit of their goals.
