Parts of Karachi to Experience 8-Hour Gas Outage on December 14 SSGC

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced a temporary gas supply suspension in parts of Karachi on December 14 due to the relocation of a high-pressure gas pipeline at Peoples Chowrangi for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The outage, set to last for eight hours, will begin at 10:00 PM on December 14 and continue until 6:00 AM on December 15. Key facilities, including Aga Khan Hospital, Liaquat National Hospital, and Saylani Welfare Trust, will be affected during this period. Gas supply to nearby households has already been restricted as part of ongoing profiling measures.

SSGC emphasized that the pipeline relocation is crucial for accommodating infrastructure improvements related to the BRT project.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, residents are grappling with a severe gas shortage as winter sets in. Frequent gas cuts and low pressure, particularly in densely populated areas like Latifabad and Qasimabad, have made daily life difficult. Gas supply is typically cut off from 9 PM to 6 AM, and the available gas pressure during other times is too low for cooking or heating. Many households have been forced to rely on alternatives like LPG cylinders or food from local tandoors.

Despite complaints from local lawmakers and residents, the situation remains unresolved. Commercial consumers continue to receive uninterrupted gas, raising concerns about inequitable distribution. Political leaders, especially from MQM-Pakistan, have urged the government and SSGC to address the issue, particularly for low-income and vulnerable communities affected by these gas outages.
