During COP29, PM Sharif is expected to play a prominent role, addressing the Climate Action Summit and participating in high-level events on the summit’s sidelines. He will also engage in bilateral meetings with various world leaders to discuss pressing climate-related issues. Notably, he will attend the “Glaciers 2025: Actions for Glaciers” event, organized by the President of Tajikistan, focusing on glacier preservation.
PM Sharif is also scheduled to meet with the Prime Ministers of Denmark and the Czech Republic to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations and address climate challenges faced by Pakistan. Pakistan, ranked among the world’s top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries, is experiencing a surge in extreme weather events, including floods, heatwaves, and glacial lake outburst floods.
Pakistan’s dire situation, particularly following the 2022 floods that displaced 33 million people and caused $30 billion in damages, will be highlighted at COP29. The country will advocate for increased international climate finance to strengthen resilience against these ongoing impacts.
