Russia’s gas production down trend continued in 2025, with official data showing a notable year-on-year decline. According to the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), the country’s cumulative gas output fell by 3.8% during January-August 2025, totaling 431.4 billion cubic meters (bcm).
Natural gas production was reported at 364 bcm in the same period, marking a 3.4% annual drop. In August alone, natural gas output reached 40.9 bcm. This was 5.2% higher than July 2025, but 6.6% lower compared to August 2024.
Associated petroleum gas also faced a decline. Production stood at 67.4 bcm between January and August, reflecting a fall of 4.6% year-on-year. The data highlighted continued pressure on Russia’s energy sector, with gas production down in multiple categories.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) production also decreased. Total LNG output during the eight months was 20.8 million tons, down 6% compared with the same period last year. In August 2025, LNG production was recorded at 2.1 million tons, which is 19.4% lower than August 2024 and 3.5% less than July 2025.
The decline in output comes as global energy markets face uncertainty, and Russia seeks to diversify its export destinations. Analysts note that lower gas production may affect both domestic supply and export commitments if the trend continues.
With gas production down across several categories, experts believe Russia may have to adjust its strategies in the coming months.
