Karachi Teacher Accused of Assaulting Child at Autism Centre

KARACHI – A disturbing incident has surfaced at an autism centre in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal, where a female teacher allegedly assaulted a special needs child.

The incident took place on September 26 and was captured on CCTV. The footage went viral on social media, sparking outrage among parents, rights activists, and the general public.

Following the widespread reaction, police registered a case on October 2 under the Sindh Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act. The complaint also includes charges of assault against the accused teacher.

The management of the autism centre has already dismissed the teacher involved. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to arrest her, with police expecting to take her into custody soon.

Rights groups have condemned the incident, stressing the need for stricter monitoring of institutions that provide services to children with special needs. Parents have also demanded stronger protections to ensure that vulnerable children at any autism centre are treated with care and respect.

What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how children perceive and interact with the world. It is often marked by difficulties in communication, social skills, and repetitive behaviors.

Children with autism may have a wide range of abilities. Some may struggle with verbal communication, while others may show advanced skills in specific areas. Early diagnosis and proper support can help children improve their social and communication abilities, allowing them to live more fulfilling lives.

Although the exact cause of autism remains unclear, experts believe that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in its development. With growing awareness, more families are seeking timely interventions to support children on the spectrum.
