UN Security Council Weighs Possible Meeting On India-Pakistan Tensions

Amid escalating tensions in South Asia, the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Evangelos Sekeris, has indicated that a formal meeting to address the India-Pakistan situation could be on the horizon. Sekeris, who also serves as Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, suggested the session might provide both nations a chance to present their positions and potentially ease regional frictions.

Speaking at a press briefing after assuming the rotating UNSC presidency, Sekeris acknowledged the gravity of the current standoff, emphasizing the Council’s responsibility to maintain international peace and security. He clarified that the UNSC is open to requests for a meeting, despite India’s long-standing resistance to third-party mediation under the framework of the 1972 Simla Agreement.

While a Council meeting remains uncertain, Sekeris stressed that the platform could help foster dialogue and propose solutions. However, practical hurdles persist, especially with India’s firm stance against external intervention and the geopolitical sensitivities among UNSC permanent members.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also offered his “good offices” to mediate, underscoring the international community’s growing concern about the risks posed by renewed hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
