Schools and Colleges: Winter Break Extension Decision

The Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a comprehensive verdict extending winter vacations following an initial brief order due to the prevailing smog conditions.

Justice Shahid Karim delivered a detailed two-page directive, instructing the Punjab Education Department to formally announce the extended winter break.

The court’s decision covers all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, in response to petitions addressing the escalating smog threat.

Previously, the Punjab government had already implemented a three-day school week in Lahore, responding to the severe smog conditions.

This measure aimed to comply with previous Lahore High Court orders, intending to alleviate the smog’s impact on the city’s air quality.

The dense smog prevalent during early winter days stems from various sources, including vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and crop residue burning.

Notably, educational institutes in Punjab are currently observing winter break from December 18 to 31, 2023. The caretaker government is yet to officially endorse the court’s order. If the additional week of vacation is confirmed, educational institutions will reopen on January 8, 2024.
