Shah Mahmood now heads PTI in Imran Khan’s absence

Foreign Office green-lights Pakistan cricket team for World Cup

In the absence of Imran Khan, senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has assumed the party’s leadership. He will be assisted by Asad Qaiser, Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Shehryar Afridi, according to party sources. Imran Khan had entrusted Qureshi with election preparations a week before.

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister, was arrested in the Toshakhana case and sentenced to three years in prison. Reacting to the arrest, Shah Mehmood Qureshi urged party workers not to resort to violence but to fight for true freedom through legal means. He also expressed the party’s intention to challenge the verdict through higher judicial channels, citing concerns about justice not being adequately served.

This is the second time Imran Khan has been detained in a case, and he is currently facing over 150 cases since his removal from power on April 10, 2022. His arrest and disqualification have been linked to the upcoming national elections in Pakistan, which are scheduled to be held later this year.
