Apple has introduced a new feature for its AirPods Pro 2 that allows them to function as “clinical-grade” hearing aids, although FDA approval is still pending.
This feature enhances specific sounds, such as speech or environmental noise, in real time and creates a personalized hearing profile for users, improving audio experiences across music, movies, and phone calls.

While the FDA has not yet approved this feature, Apple’s pursuit of approval suggests a long-term strategy for integrating health technology into their products.
Once approved, the AirPods Pro 2 could become significant medical devices, expanding their use beyond casual listening.
Additionally, Apple announced a five-minute certified hearing test set to be released with iOS 18. This test will let users evaluate their hearing health by responding to various tones, with results stored in the Apple Health app and shareable with healthcare providers.
The hearing profile from this test will be used with Media Assist, which adjusts audio to enhance speech and instruments, benefiting both those with hearing impairments and those with normal hearing.
Both the hearing aid feature and the new hearing test will be available globally this fall, positioning the AirPods Pro 2 as a health tool beyond high-end earbuds.
