US Reports Airline Jet Fuel Costs Surge By $1.8 Billion, Up 56% in March

Global aviation is facing strong financial pressure as fuel prices continue to rise. The industry has reported sharp increases in operational expenses in recent months.

In March, the cost per gallon of oil reached $3.13. This marked a rise of 74 cents compared to February. Overall fuel consumption also increased by 20 percent, according to US transportation data.

As a result, costs jumped significantly for airlines worldwide. The surge in jet fuel prices has created one of the biggest challenges for the aviation sector since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Industry reports show that costs jumped further due to disruptions in global oil supply chains. Tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz have affected shipping routes and pushed oil prices higher.

Airlines spent $3.88 billion on jet fuel in March 2025. However, the same costs have climbed to $5.06 billion in March this year. This shows how quickly costs jumped within a short period.

Fuel expenses now make up nearly one-quarter of total airline operating costs. This has forced carriers to increase ticket prices and baggage fees.

Many airlines have also reduced flight routes to manage rising expenses. Cost-cutting measures are being introduced across major US carriers.

Budget airline Spirit Airlines recently reported major financial stress. The company said it faced $100 million in additional fuel expenses in March and April. These rising expenses contributed to its restructuring failure.

Industry leaders have warned that costs jumped for all airlines, regardless of size. Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said high fuel prices affect every carrier in the market.

He also noted that airlines must build stronger financial resilience to survive such shocks. Fuel price volatility remains a major challenge for long-term planning.

Some low-cost carriers have requested government support. They asked the US Department of Transportation for a $2.5 billion bailout to manage rising costs.

However, officials have stated that such assistance is not necessary at this stage.

With global tensions affecting oil supply, analysts expect continued pressure on the aviation sector. For now, costs jumped remain a key concern for airlines worldwide.
