A recent study found that gym equipment is loaded with harmful bacteria, posing potential health risks for users.
Researchers from FitRated gathered samples from 27 gym machines and discovered over a million germs per square inch on each piece of equipment. They identified bacteria such as gram-positive cocci, known to cause skin infections, and antibiotic-resistant gram-negative rods on treadmills, exercise bikes, and free weights.

Shockingly, free weights were found to have 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, while treadmills had 74 times more germs than a public bathroom faucet. The study points out that bacteria thrive on gym equipment due to frequent use by many people. Despite gyms offering disinfectant wipes, many users neglect to clean the machines before or after use.
Experts recommend disinfecting equipment, maintaining proper hygiene, avoiding face-touching, and washing hands thoroughly to reduce germ exposure. Additionally, changing out of gym clothes immediately after a workout is suggested for added protection.
