Imminent Famine Threatens Gaza After Fatal Attacks

A day after the UN Security Council resolution demanding increased aid for Gaza, Israeli forces conducted fresh strikes on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of over a dozen people. The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning about an impending famine. Despite the Security Council resolution not calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, Palestinians mourned their losses, with strikes hitting various areas across the Gaza Strip. The health ministry in Gaza reported 18 casualties from a strike on a house in the central Nuseirat refugee camp, and additional areas were affected throughout the region, with clouds of smoke rising over Khan Yunis city in the south.

The airstrikes followed the approval of a resolution by the Security Council, which urged the immediate, safe, and unimpeded delivery of life-saving aid to Gaza on a large scale. The resolution also called for the establishment of conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities but did not explicitly demand an immediate end to the ongoing combat. The wording of the resolution had been a subject of debate among members for several days, with certain provisions toned down at the insistence of Washington to avoid explicitly calling for a ceasefire to halt the conflict. The actual impact of the vote on the ground, where Gazans are struggling in crowded shelters for essentials like food, fuel, water, and medical care, remains uncertain.
