Iran Repatriates Over 450,000 Irregular Migrants, Primarily Afghans, Since August

Iran has reportedly repatriated at least 450,000 refugees, mostly from Afghanistan, who lacked the necessary legal documents in the past three months, according to officials from Iran’s National Migration Organization.

The repatriation is said to be part of a comprehensive plan targeting individuals who had “illegally entered” the country.

The provinces of Tehran, Sistan and Baluchestan, Razavi Khorasan, Qom, Kerman, Yazd, Fars, and Alborz have been identified as having the highest number of refugees, with Afghanistan being the primary source.

Iran has long hosted Afghan refugees, and the recent repatriations come amid discussions between Iranian and Taliban officials during a visit to Tehran by a Taliban delegation.
