The government of Punjab has announced that it “Punjab Completes First Phase of ‘Suthra Punjab’ Cleanliness Program” successfully. This marks a major milestone in the province’s drive to clean up towns, villages, and cities.
Under the first phase, 110 tehsils out of a total of 149 in the province were outsourced for garbage collection and sanitation services. The plan introduced house-to-house waste pickup, drain de-silting, and establishment of safe dumping sites for each tehsil.
The programme also brought in modern waste-management resources. A new sanitation fleet — including 700 advanced waste collection vehicles — was launched to support the cleanup efforts across all districts. This modern fleet is intended to handle daily waste collection and help maintain cleaner streets.
Officials say that since starting the first phase, over 1.5 million tons of waste have been collected under the programme. The programme also established hundreds of temporary waste collection points and enclosures. Local authorities report that many complaints from citizens were addressed quickly through the programme’s complaint‑redressal mechanism.
The success of the first phase has allowed expansion of services in many districts. For example, in regions covered by Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC), door-to-door garbage collection now covers all tehsils of Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Murree, Jhelum and Talagang districts.
Officials believe that achieving the goals of the first phase strengthens the foundation for the next steps. Under the broader vision of the “Suthra Punjab” initiative, authorities plan to expand services to more areas, modernise waste‑to‑energy infrastructure, and make waste management sustainable.
With the announcement that Punjab completes first phase of ‘Suthra Punjab’ Cleanliness Program, the provincial government says it aims to maintain and build on this momentum. The public‑private model, combined with digital monitoring and modern logistics, is expected to improve living conditions for millions across Punjab.
